South Asian Census Language Resources

South Asians are one of the fastest growing immigrant groups with approximately 5.4 million living in the US. The South Asian community, tracing its roots to Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives, among other diaspora, has grown by 40 percent between 2010 and 2017.1

An accurate census is necessary to ensure representation of diverse South Asian American populations. Census information is used to determine how $800 billion federal assistance2 is distributed to critical programs, and how seats are allocated and district lines are drawn for the U.S. House of Representatives, state legislatures, and local boards.
